A Matter of Time

A group of old friends gathered at the house yesterday. We knew each other young, now we know each other old. Where once we would have danced all night this time we drank in measured quantities and floated in a pool. Sedate with quiet music in the background. Conversation filled the air and clocks were watched to ensure everyone got home before dark. Periodically a swallow would drop by for a drink. That’s how quietly we sat.

There was a period after my wife died, when I thought I had moved on from all of this. That death had closed a door on a period of my life, and that a new time was upon me. Then last month at my birthday celebration that came to feel too linear and I thought briefly of my life as a tree with every phase a ring, but that came to feel too static. Where I want to go is a place where I don’t really have the language to go except in the most rudimentary way—the world of light and matter.

After all, I see myself as a collection of atoms colliding with other collections and now I just have to find a way to describe it because somehow it feels right to think that the mysteries of the quantum world might be at play when to comes to now, the future, and the past. I think it’s a question of time and how I see it. At this moment, it feels like something that’s moving around me rather than being something I move through, and that’s opened a lot of doors for me. So, I think that’s where I’ll go exploring.
