Catching Up

I went to see Butch Hancock last night, and I almost hate to admit it, but it was my first time. Of course, there are lots of artists I haven’t seen in person. So, I’m not singling him out. I just wish I’d seen him when the songs were new. It was the same with Jimmie Dale Gilmore. I got to his music late, and I’ve never seen him in person, but when we still bought CDs, I bought a few. I mention Jimmie because I realized last night that Butch wrote one of the songs Jimmie performs that I really like, Just a Wave, Not the Water.

Of course, there’s a time for everything, and maybe this is just my time to catch up. I suppose it falls into the better late than never category. Generally speaking, in fact, it seems these, my latter years, are pretty much focused on discovering music I might have missed, both old and new. Satellite radio and streaming are a big help. I only wish they were more financially rewarding to the artists. Maybe the return to vinyl is one way to give artists a physical good to sell that is actually profitable. We’ll see.

I guess the only good thing about seeing these artists I missed is that they’re not a nostalgia act. They’re actually new to me and that feels like a good thing, to still have a desire to hear new music. Also, it makes me feel fresh, and focused on the present, even though I might be digging up things from the past, and I’ll head back to the better late than never to bolster that idea. And this sounds too complicated. Let’s just say, I’m in a good musical space these days thanks to the internet and my friends.
