Chance Are

When I moved from the Gulf Coast to the Hill Country of Texas, I was greatly relieved to be rid of the threat of hurricanes and tropical storms. Now I find myself yearning for them because it’s one of the ways we get the big rains that fill creeks, rivers, lakes, and aquifers. I say this because it looks as though one might be heading our way coming out of Mexico of all places. Hurricane Polo.

It will be greatly reduced in strength by the time it arrives in Texas. So, it will mostly be a rain event if it gets here, but there is also a cold front moving our way and that might help. I think both of them will have to team up to defeat the big heat dome sitting over the southeast, which means the weather picture is sort of muddy for next week, with a lot of weather players angling for control. I hope the cool, wet ones win.

In the end, cool weather will eventually come for no other reason than the earth is spinning and nothing has a chance to stand still for all that long. Plus, we’re losing our sunlight and that naturally cools things off. And there’s that super El Niño in the Pacific waiting to rage. My guess is Texas will have an interesting winter and I think that’s some sort of curse, but we’ll have to wait and see.
