Changing Direction

I started writing down one path this morning, got to the end and decided to double back and do something different. Partly, the original idea seemed sort of half-baked and it failed to get my heart racing. Of course, I don’t generally want my heart to be racing, but at least I like to feel pumped, even if it’s just slightly, at what I’ve written down. Oddly enough, the callback came when I took a short break and walked outside. It’s nice and cool this morning.

So, I came back in and decided to talk about what I did yesterday. I listened to all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies as performed by the Berlin Philharmonic with conductor Herbert von Karajan. As I listened, I read George Groves book, Beethoven and His Nine Symphonies. In addition to explaining each work, movement by movement, Mr. Groves provides historical background. I learned a lot about the music, and a lot about the history that surrounded it. If you think we live in interesting times, think about living and writing in Europe with Napoleon marching around town.

I finished the day with a visit to my son at his new place on the Pedernales. We cleaned some stone steps going down to the river and then we went and walked in said river. Along the way we looked at plants and talked about collecting seeds. He reminded me I needed to get my wildflower seeds out before the end of the month, and I thought what a nice world it would be if more people were interested in planting seeds and growing things just for the beauty they provide.
