Finding Flowers

Wingpod Purslane

I like to look down when I walk because that’s where the flowers are. Yesterday, as I walked through a patch of tall grass and wildflowers on my back lots, I noticed a flower I'd never seen before, Wingpod purslane. It has a pretty little bloom that runs and hides when the sun gets too high. I think today I’ll try to gather some of its seeds to keep it around, maybe move it to the front yard gardens.

It seems a nice thing to do on father’s day, encourage a young plant to grow and maybe take the spotlight. In this case the wingpod was down in the tall grass and hardly visible and mostly overshadowed by a small white morning glory with a flower three or four times its size. I bet the Wingpod would enjoy a place in the sun with someone to water and look out for it.

Of course, plants have survived for millennia without the aid of gardeners or random strangers gathering their seeds. But I think that’s the point of flowers, to draw attention. Mostly for pollinators but in this case for someone to take them home. Not much different from humans, really, because we try to dress up and look nice in the hope that someone will take us home. So, look out Wingpod, you’ve been discovered and don’t worry, I’ll only take a few seeds because I do like nature taking its course.
