Flood Thoughts

The Fourth of July floods on the Guadalupe sure took the buzz off this Fourth of July weekend. I can’t stop thinking about the loss of life and especially the children, and especially the ones at camps away from their parents. If any good can come of it, I hope it’s something to help future generations remain safe. It seems the least we can do. And I hesitate to say more because the camps are already regulated, and I really have no idea what’s in place.

Meanwhile social media is abuzz with punditry spewing all manner of rumors, and while I’d like to keep up with the news about what’s going on, I have no desire to hear random strangers pontificate about what happened and why. Maybe it’s just me and my old school ways, but I liked the days when reporters kept their opinions to themselves and concentrated on facts. Eventually, I’d like to see some sort of hearing, an after action review. It seems a reasonable thing to do to acknowledge the deaths of so many people on what was supposed to be a happy weekend, especially in a world where data flows at the speed of light, and I get constant weather warnings on my phone.

Of course, in a world seemingly run by so-called influencers everything seems to have come unstuck. So, I hope I’m not left with my sorrow while politicians don their costumes and play familiar roles and point fingers. Ultimately, of course, I’m an optimist and in the face of such a disaster I feel there’s a high likelihood that right minded people will step up and do something that might benefit us all down the road. If for no other reason than to save a future child’s life.
