Flower Find

Frogfruit with a Bordered Patch butterfly.

There’s a plant growing in the middle of my driveway, with tiny, tiny white flowers, each touched with a dab of yellow, bunched around a lavender seed. You can see them on your hands and knees quite easily. I have no idea what prompted me to look closer, but I did and now I can’t unsee it. It’s attractive, and I believe I’ll try to grow more of it. It’s called Texas Frogfruit. It will fit right in with the Straggler Daisies, also known as Horseherb, that occupy most of my yard.

This is one of the benefits of country living. There’s no HOA pestering me about weeds or keeping my grass green. It’s only green when it rains, after that it’s on its own, and the so-called weeds get to have a go at the dirt, and most of them tend to like dry conditions. So, it’s a win-win situation. Plus, they seem to flower all summer and the butterflies and moths like that. I think words gotten out about my yard, because we have a nice selection of winged critters buzzing around.

Of course, my approach might not suit everyone’s eye because sometimes it can look overgrown and weedy, but I like most of my weeds and I like the natural overgrown look, to a degree. I do keep some of it mowed and trimmed, because I don’t need some random TikTok guy thinking I need help with an overgrown yard. I guess you could say I’m growing weeds with intent. And to the windblown seeds I say, welcome, let’s see what you’ve got.
