Blackfoot Daisies

Let’s mutter around some more in the gardens and talk about blackfoot daisies. I’ve got them planted in four spots, and they’re doing amazingly well, especially since the recent rains have fallen, and we got another inch last night. I set them up to get the soft morning sun then afternoon shade. The soil is well drained although it might be too rich for them. I’d like them to become a fixture and now that I’m once again spending time with the plants, maybe that can happen.

What usually happens, however, is that I get distracted. Go away for a few days. Start thinking about other things. I forget to water. Then, boom. They’re gone. Or maybe a hard freeze comes, and that gets them, too. And sometimes, they just die, because even plants have a biological clock that stops ticking for no apparent reason. Or maybe it speaks to my skills as a gardener. I’ll be the first to admit I might have more desire than expertise and I fly a lot by the seat of my pants.

In any case, I’m getting a great deal of pleasure this spring watching them thrive just as I’m enjoying seeing some transplanted salvia greggi do well. The latter was struggling in the grasp of the big crape myrtle fighting for water and nutrients. They’re now in the same ground as the daisies with fresh leaves and flowers. And that my friends is how my garden grows, although nothing is all in a row and I’m not sure I’d wish it so.
