Good Things

Larkspur

Big day, today. My brush pile is going away. Unfortunately, it is probably home to critters. I guess you might consider this a version of gentrification. We own the land and would like to use it as something other than a home for mice, snakes, scorpions, and whatever else might find a big brush pile an appealing place to live. It will be interesting to see what departs. Of course, whatever leaves also might be too small for us to notice, but that’s just the way of the world.

I’ve had that feeling myself these days. Elephants are wrestling and they don’t really give two figs about what’s going on in my life. Which, under normal circumstances, is perfectly fine. But this seems like a different battle, and I don’t even want to look at my retirement fund. Of course, I learned long ago that watching it doesn’t do any good, anyhow, because I’m not really smart enough to be able to compete with computers trading stocks. So, it’s best just to leave it be and hope I live long enough to see it recover if it takes a dive.

My normal solution, when faced with an upset out of my control, is to tighten my focus and pay attention to my home and my gardens, and things there are going well. New plants are in the ground and a new plant showed up unbidden, Larkspur, with a pretty purple flower. From what I can tell it does a pretty fair job of reseeding. So, we shall see how true that is next spring. That’s how the coral sage got its start and now I have something to anticipate, and that’s a good thing, and it’s why I garden.
