Late Life Advice
A blessed rain is falling this morning in my piece of the Hill Country. Slow and steady. No breezes signalling a fast moving storm although thunderstorms are forecast for later this morning. We shall see. We’ve been a blank spot recently when it comes to meeting forecasts. Rain all around, but none for us. It happened last Friday evening. There was rain just down the road, but none fell on my little town.
Of course, on the Friday in question I was also about 100 miles east of here around Schulenburg hunkered down under a shelter as the rain blew sideways. It was the kickoff party for a little get together called Songwriter Serenade. I was there as part of the sound crew. Plugging in mics and speakers is a nice job to have in your old age. And it’s not really a job, job. There’s no money involved. It’s for the love of the music and to get me out of the house and let me hang out with friends. The big show was all day Saturday as they ran through 14 semi-finalists to pick seven finalists and then declare a winner. It was all capped off with a judges show that night. It was a lovely day of post storm music.
On Sunday, we ate breakfast in Flatonia and headed back home where we stopped in New Braunfels to hear another friend play a solo show before gathering for a dinner of barbeque. If I could give any advice to anyone in their disappearing stage of life, it would be this. Find a musician you like and become something of a groupie. It gives you something nice to do, plus you’ll meet other followers and make friends with them. And almost everyone will be of an age where they think 9:30 is bedtime and that getting home before dark is a good thing.
