Lights, Action

Northern Lights, Johnson City, TX 11/11/25 picture by Travis Wilson

It’s exactly the sort of call you want in the middle of the night while dead asleep. “Dad! Go outside and look at  the Northern Lights.” I did as I was told and was rewarded with the most colorful night sky I’ve ever seen. And I was happy I lived in a country town with a dark sky ordinance, where the night sky counts as something we want to see and it’s not just a thing that hangs over our heads.

As for the Northern Lights it was never something I thought I’d see. But a big solar storm is hitting the planet and while it might disrupt electrical grids and cause trouble, it's repaying us for the inconvenience by lighting up the night sky. From what I’ve read, the Tuesday night lights were early, so that means tonight' s show might be better if that’s even possible. I’ll have to nap today in preparation. That seems like work I can do.

There’s a peace that sweeps over me as I stare at the night sky, and last night was no exception. It felt good in the chill night air looking at the radiant sky. And it got me thinking, as it always does, about what it must have been like for the first humanoid who actually saw the stars, and wondered what they were, knowing they were something different. And how did he or she tell the others what they felt? What words formed? I don’t know. But I’m glad they did, because eventually it taught us the value of looking up and seeing there’s more to life than just the mud at our feet.
