New Day
This is closer to the old days. An early morning start, when the day is dark and nothing revealed. There’s a cool breeze and I can make out the garden spider hanging in its web. The little wren is safe in its nook in the porch post. Mama cat is fed, and the new tomcat ran off when a sound spooked it. Patience will win the day, of course, but that’s a story only time will tell.
I’ve been hand watering selected plants and a few trees during this recent dry spell. Rain is expected, starting tomorrow. All the forecasts for the center of the country are dramatic, sometimes that’s TV and sometimes it’s real. When I worked in the newspaper business in the early 70s, we denigrated TV news by saying, “If it bleeds, it leads.” It was a way of saying that TV news was only suitable for things that crash and burn. Real news was meant to be read. I guess TV and the internet showed us.
Of course, when everyone wants to be entertained, how do you get them to entertain serious subjects. Mostly it takes a disaster to focus people’s attention on something gone wrong to bring about change, but then once the change occurs everyone forgets the disaster and begins to gripe about why they have to do this new thing. Vaccines spring to mind. But there’s a longer list I’m sure, and with that I’m off to drink my coffee and welcome in a new day.
