New Thoughts

The new garden along the north fence is rounding into form. The mist flowers I planted this spring have taken root and are expanding their footprint. The sage is in bloom. The chinquapin oak is flush with leaves. The yellow bells is getting ready for fall. I’ve decided to let the bindweed have the fence, but I’ve planted morning glory and alamo vine as alternatives. The latter came from seeds I potted on the porch.

Speaking of porches. I’ve also decided a raised bed would let me try my hand at some vegetables. During my visit to Maine I saw a raised garden bed that was waist high, and that appealed to me. First of all, I could probably keep it on the south porch where it would get decent sun, and secondly there would certainly be less bending. I thought I might try growing a tomato because I like fresh tomatoes. It would also be close to water from my rain barrels, and I could plant a few herbs as well, or maybe a bright bloom or two.

It’s an oddly satisfying routine to walk the plants, water jug in hand, being a rain god, dispersing liquid gold to the favored in the garden. Of course, pretending to be Zeus is a little pretentious, but I have lots of other choices, if I trust Wikipedia and its list of rain gods. The Navajo apparently liked Coyote. And I’m good with that because I’ve always liked coyotes for their grace and survival instinct. I think we’d get along well together. And that’s it for today, just a few thoughts about the garden in my small world.
