Sightseeing
On our way to Marathon last week, we went via Del Rio. It wasn’t a straight-line trip, but there were sights to see, and we wanted to see them. First up was the Devil’s Sinkhole in Rocksprings followed by lunch in Del Rio. We didn’t actually see the sinkhole. But we picked up brochures at the visitor’s center. In Del Rio we ate lunch and checked out Lake Amistad. It’s big and low and needs a good flood to fill back up. Maybe the super El Niño will bring one. I’m sure the locals would be happy.
After lunch we hopped back on Highway 90 to continue the trip. Next up was Seminole Canyon State Park and Historic Site. It’s a little spit of land that runs from the highway down to the Rio Grande. The canyon is where ancient people used to live before there were borders and the land was full of buffalo. They drew pictures on the walls to document their life and left their bones behind for us to see. I’m going back one day to hike down to that river and see those caves.
We left the park and stopped two miles down the road to view the highest road bridge in Texas. It spans the Pecos River Gorge. I guess we could have seen it simply by driving over it, but sometimes you have to stop and soak it in. The gorge is really pretty and way bigger than you can imagine. I’d go back to look at it again just to see it at a different time of day. After that it was Highway 90 to Marathon. Next time I might stop in Langtry to visit Judge Bean’s place to see if it’s changed any since I was there as a kid in the 50s. And I can assure you, there will be a next time.
