Soft Days

The air is unsettled this morning. Pacific moisture, the remnants of Hurricane Polo, is paying a visit. There’s also a slow-moving cold front dropping temperatures and playing footsie with the tropical moisture. We’re in for a fun few days of wet cool weather. That’s fine by me. I have nowhere to go, and I want to dig, so the rain will make it easier. I could have soaked the ground with a hose, but I thought I’d wait for the rain. Lazy?

The digging is small. A magnetic gate sensor has malfunctioned. I need to expose it and see what’s up. It’s easier task to do when the ground is soft, and in the next few days it will be. The cool air also will give me a chance to do some yard work. There are bushes I want to trim in advance of winter. And there’s a rapacious grape vine that needs tending by the front gate. Trimming and pulling in cool weather is always less painful and taxing for an old body.

I hope this is what passes for fall in the Hill Country and is our gateway to winter. I’m ready for cool weather. Plus, I want a chance to try out my newly repaired fireplace, the one that will draft and not let the smoke back into the front room. I’m looking forward tending and sitting by a fire. It’s not really a great way to warm a house, but it’s a great way to warm a soul, and that’s what I’m truly after.
