The Coming Cold
Things will freeze this weekend. The forecast low for Saturday and Sunday is 13. That’s cold in anyone’s book. Rain chances are mixed. But there will be enough ice to give an old man pause when it comes to walking outside. I think I’ll get my hiking poles out for the extra support if I do need to get around. Mostly I think I’ll just stand on the porch and watch.
The cats are set with their little houses and warming lamps. I’ve started feeding them in the dog run because it’s easier on me. Not as far to walk. And wow, that sounds lazy. But there’s a method to the madness. I’m cleaning out the garage in preparation for a remodel. I want to put in cabinets and a countertop along one wall. I can use the extra workspace, and it might encourage me to do some woodworking.
I’m glad I don’t have to face this sort of weather all the time, but I suppose I’d get used to it. I know as a kid I was always praying for snow. We even got it one year in the desert when we lived in Twenty-Nine Palms, California. Talk about a beautiful sight. That was it. And cold was good when it came to hunting, although I have no idea why. It just seemed right. At this point though, I’m mainly intent on survival, which means eating and staying warm, and luckily I can still manage both by myself.
