Weather

The storm is done and the sun is melting the ice and snow. Winter is once again backing off. There are still patches in the shade, but today’s high promises to send most of it packing. I might venture out. Mostly I’ve stayed on the porch since I’m no fan of ice and falls. And when I do walk around, I have a pole for support. Apparently, age brings a sort of wisdom, or a low tolerance for risk of bodily injury.

I actually enjoy this part of life in the Hill Country. When I lived on the Gulf Coast snow and ice was a rarity, too close to the equator. Winter here is more like its true self, and I like dipping my toe in it. But this is probably as far north as I care to go when it comes to living. I’m not sure I’d acclimate well to a constant diet of frozen. I’m happy with the occasional taste.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how the plants faired. I suspect my bulbs will have enjoyed the cold spell, although I doubt much of the cold seeped very deep into the ground. We had one young cherry tree that we protected. I’ll wait a day or two before I uncover it, maybe when the nighttime lows are above freezing. Lucky for me I got two sweaters for Christmas, and this weather feels like it’s their time.
