Winter Day

I feel a little silly going on about this, but when your weather is the exception, rather than the rule, it’s what you talk about. It’s cold, below freezing cold. And it’s going to rain, sleet and maybe snow. The accumulation forecast looks to be light, but I’m not one to judge. I’m only here to accept my fate, although I’ll be inside so it’s not much of a terror unless something breaks, and I think the chances there are low.

My cats are snug in their little bungalows as well. The heat lamps are on, and food is close at hand. The beam of our house runs east and west, so the cats are in the lee of the house on the south porch, sheltered from the north wind as well. Sometimes providence provides. Although, I think the whole point of being a feral cat is learning to live with nature and knowing which neighbor has a warm spot safe enough for snuggling, providing of course a racoon or skunk hasn’t gotten there first.

I feel sorry for the trees that decided to leaf out during our recent warm spell, the Mesquite was all in. They’ll get slapped down with this freeze. And they’ll be right to be upset because they waited and waited and winter seemed sure to never show up so why not get busy growing. Of course, two days of hard winter burning up a false start on spring doesn’t really amount to much when you’re a tree. It’s just another story for the rings. And that is how nature does it.
