A Wedding

I had a family weekend. Spent a lovely Friday evening with my wife’s cousin and his wife. We reminisced, talked about the future, and I played them a few songs. The next morning I headed slightly north for a nephews wedding, the son of my brother-in-law. There I caught up with my son and his wife. It was a good day, and I stayed long enough to let the party get started before turning the evening over to the young ones. I drove home Sunday morning.

For my son, it was a weekend of beginnings and endings. On the day before the wedding he went to the funeral of a friend's father, a man he met when they moved in next door to us, when both the boys were young. They ran cross country, graduated high school, and stayed in touch. I’m glad I was able to give that sort of life to my son, one filled with life-long friendships. It seems a nice gift.

As for the wedding, it will be fun to see how it all turns out. The vows are simple to say, but offer up the potential for more pain than some people can bear, and sometimes people say the words with no real idea of what it means to take a vow. Of course, learning to not stand in judgment is one of those lessons that is there for the learning, too. So, I wish them well, and I hope they’re able to weather whatever storms may come, after the blessings have flowed.
