Being Prepared

When I built my workroom, I asked that all the locks be keyed to the same key. Then I forgot that request. Which explains why, ten or so years down the road, I stumbled upon a cup full of keys with only the vaguest idea as to what they might unlock. Then I remembered the workroom. So, yesterday I spent a good portion of the day testing all those keys and reworking seldom-used locks. I’m trying to get back into the habit of locking things up when I leave the house. Not something I like to do, but it’s the prudent thing to do.

I might live in the country, in a small town, but the country as a whole is mobile and bad actors abound. Plus, small-town no longer equals good and holy where everyone knows your name. These days, if someone sees something lying about, they’re just as likely as not to feel as though they’re in a cargo cult, God’s been good to them, and left them a gift that’s theirs’s for the taking. How else would you explain a car with the keys in the ignition?

I’d say that’s why we have a gate at the end of the drive, but that was primarily to keep the dog in. Nowadays my focus has shifted to keeping the dogs out, and the deer too, but they only eat the plants, they don’t dig them up and take them home. I’d say it’s sad we’ve come to this, but it’s probably more a symptom of my age and a slight decrease in my belief in the basic goodness of humans than anything else. But in the end, I think a slight bit of paranoia is probably natural to the beast given that we started out an animals before we developed a brain.
