Cut Flowers

I bought some cut flowers the other day. Carnations. White and red. Friends were coming over, and I wanted a little color in the kitchen. The flowers have done well. They still look fresh. I think I’m going to make a habit of this. Flowers outside. Flowers inside. They were less than $5 a bundle. I’ll go for different colors on the next go just to spice things up.

Reminds me of my youth. Early in my marriage we had a place just outside downtown Houston. On my way home one day I noticed a dumpster flowing with flowers. It was the discards from a wholesale florist shop. I grabbed some to take home. They were a big hit. We had fresh flowers the entire time we lived there. Now I have fresh flowers again. This time there’s just me to look at them, however, but it’s probably okay to do nice things for yourself.

I wonder why I haven’t done it before. I guess you just get out of the habit, slide into a bad routine, and presto you’re living in a home that’s lost its color. I think it’s easy to forget you have to be proactive when it comes to decorating and decorating is what makes a home a home, at least in my experience. And decorating means change. A hand print on a cave wall, a picture of a bison here and there, flowers in the kitchen, new paint in a old bedroom, outward signs of color in your soul.
