My garden must think it’s Spring. Everything is flowering. Naturally, the Fall plants are abloom, the Asters and the Gulf Muhly. But even the spring and summer plants are getting in on the action. The one that most excites me is our antique rose, Marie Pavia. I cut out the Turks Caps just for her, with more sunlight as the goal. And I reconditioned the soil at her feet. She grew a ton of fresh leaves in response, and now buds have sprouted. Soon there will be flowers. That’s a nice thank you.
I suspect it’s the cool weather and rain that’s got everyone excited. I know it pumped me up. I wonder, however, if they know what’s coming. I suspect they do. Most of the plants in my gardens have been through this before. I imagine the short days are their biggest clue. The sun is heading off to sunnier climes, leaving us in the dark, to fend for ourselves when the cold comes. And the cold will come, and it will feel eternal. But all of us, flowers and humans, will sleep, to dream of spring, waiting patiently for the real thing.
