Garden Party

I’ve decided I’m going to war against nutsedge. Not on a grand scale, just in what I now call the north fence garden. The problem I have is that the garden is currently mostly bare dirt and that’s just an invitation for everything to come grow. I can dig up the nutsedge as I dig up the coastal bermuda. Of course, there are poison options, but I’ve always preferred pulling and digging as my weed control option, even when I had a lawn in the suburbs.

Old time readers will recall my five year battle with khaki weed. I eventually won, but I spent a lot of spring on my knees in the yard. I don’t think this battle will be nearly as onerous. First of all, the dirt in the garden is well turned, and I can cover a lot of ground in an hour. Plus, I have ground cover options that will help choke out the nutsedge. Straggler Daisy (Calyptocarpus vialis) is all over my yard. So getting it started won’t be hard.

The other thing I need to do is to get more plants growing. A friend is potting up some mealy blue sage from his place where it grows wild, and I’m going to put in some coral sage from one of my  other beds. It will take time for everything to naturalize and decide it likes the place, but that’s the fun of doing this work. It’s like throwing a party. You invite people over, give them a drink or two, and see which ones stay around to dance and have a good time.
