Masters of War
Humanity. Sometimes I despair. It seems as though we spend an inordinate amount of time and energy trying to figure out ways to blow up people and things. Then, because we can, we do. Blow up people and things. And it seems as though everyone is fighting someone these days. Of course, it’s probably just the way of the world. Someone is always wanting something someone has, or someone has done something someone doesn’t like, and off we go.
Unfortunately, there are people who actually enjoy that sort of activity, especially leaders, which is not a new thing given the history of empires. But gone are the days when those leaders actually lead from the front. Nowadays, they sit in high tech operations centers and have other people do the killing and the dying. I wonder what Alexander, Caesar or Genghis Khan would think. Not much, probably.
And what got me thinking about this was invasive species in my garden, which seems a weird leap. But it holds true. I think one could safely argue that humans have had a significant impact on the planet and continue to do so, changing ecosystems all along the way. Of course, in the end, I don’t think the planet cares one way or the other. Continents are still drifting, volcanoes are erupting, and mountain sides are falling to earth. So, earth will ultimately prevail, which leaves me wondering why we don’t just relax and spend more time trying to find ways to enjoy life.
