Looking Ahead

I voted. Did my civic duty. Although this is just us picking our team. Still voting is a thing I’ve cherished since I cast my first ballot in 1968. I was on active duty in Quantico, Virginia. Mailed my ballot back home. I really pondered over that vote, weighed the pros and cons before making my decision. It felt momentous. It made me feel like an adult.

My other adult cues were military service, marriage, kids, and a steady job. I managed to have all of them. I followed in the footsteps of my father as he did with his. Now, I’ve popped out on the other side, and I’m left to work out the puzzle of this final stage. So, far it feels promising, partly because I’ve gotten interested in quantum mechanics which has opened the door to the idea that all my futures are still waiting for me to discover them.

That would seem to put the onus on me, although that makes it feel like a burden when I’d prefer to think of it as an opportunity. It’s sort of like being able to choose to be happy, that sort of thing. Which is why I’m still trying to get better at golf and guitar, within the physical limits of course, of what my body allows. Age is terrifying in that regard. But I enjoy the activity, the exploration and I look forward to seeing how my vote turns out.
