Looking Day

Yesterday was a day of riding around. Went to a lake, went to a river, sat and watched the sky. There was a big rain. I reported three inches at my house, but it was closer to four. When those rains come, the rivers and creeks really run. I like to go see them. Yesterday it was the Blanco River and Miller Creek. They were both running hot and muddy. It was particularly nice to see water in the creek, because lately it was a creek in name only.

On a side note, it’s also nice to live on high ground between two rivers. For me it’s the Pedernales and the Blanco. With two more rivers on either side of those. To the north there’s the Colorado, and to the south the Guadalupe. Three of them help drain the Llano Uplift, while the fourth, the Guadalupe owes its existence to the Edwards Plateau. And if you’d like to throw in the Llano River, that’s five. I live in a geological hot spot that’s still hard at work, cutting valleys and moving dirt.

To cap it all off I had dinner on the shores of Lake Marble Falls (Colorado), then drove into the hills south of my little town to watch the sun go down. There’s nothing quite like watching the evening sky over a valley where the air’s been washed by rain and clouds are hanging around. The setting sun plays off the clouds, all the colors pop, and the air is clean and cool. All that’s left to do is trundle on home, settle down with a good book, and get a good night’s sleep. All of which I did.
