More Rain

Texas Bluebells

It’s been a wet June. Last night I woke up to thunder and lightning and found the rain gauges nearly full this morning, registering close to three inches. That’s a hard rain. My freshly mown grass likes it as do the plants. The Barbados cherry is now bearing fruit. I refer to it in the singular, but I’m fairly certain there are now seven or eight plants clumped together. Too bad the cherries are only slightly larger than pinheads.

In the back of the garden beneath the big oaks we have a new addition to the family, Texas Bluebells. Talk about a showy flower. Wow. Purple, white, gold. It’s got the colors. It came to the garden courtesy of my arborist son who picks up seeds whenever he can, then plants them. The plant was growing tall until it bloomed and then it bowed its head under the weight of all that beauty. This is its second year in the garden and first too bloom. I guess, a plant needs to get its feet on the ground before it flowers.

All the wet weather bodes well for the rest of the summer. Hurrah for the super El Nino. Although, more wet weather probably means a wet winter and that means ice and snow, which is hard thing for Texans to handle. So maybe I’ll temper my enthusiasm a bit. Although it’s hard to do that when everything is green and the plants are blooming in June. So, maybe I’ll just take the win and celebrate the rain and worry about winter when it comes.
