Nice Things
I had a wandering day yesterday. Drove to Luckenbach. Listened to music. Drove to Fredericksburg. Listened to music. At both places I ran into friends. We talked, shared stories, and drank a beverage or two. It was a warm day, but in the shade with a breeze, it felt nice to be outside amongst the living. There was even talk of plans, of things to do, and places to go. It was the sort of day that gave you hope there would be other days like it to come.
At the end of the day I came home and made plans to give the raccoons a treat. They’ve been climbing the mesquite and walking down the fence to check out the bird bath turned bird feeder. Unfortunately, despite their high wire act they couldn’t reach out and grab it. So, last night I moved it close to the fence and gave them some cucumber slices. I watched them eat, but I have no idea if they appreciated the gesture. They didn’t give a sign or anything.
Of course, I think that’s the way of the world. If you do nice things for people and expect something in return you’re likely to be disappointed. It’s best just to do nice things because it’s the thing to do and get on with your life. Although, I’m not sure why it’s the thing to do. All I know is how it makes me feel, which is good. So, that’s the reward, I suppose. Although, it is still nice every once in a while to get a hug and a thank you.
