I just saw a story that people coming out of college with degrees in computer science are having a hard time finding jobs. It appears we might have oversold the opportunities. And artificial intelligence is playing a role as well. Because it also appears the programmers might have programmed themselves right out of a job, or at least the sort of job Artificial Intelligence seems to do pretty well which is the grunt work.

So, all these grads are in a crisis, but who isn’t these days? I don’t know what petroleum engineering grads are doing. But isn’t this the way of the world. Remember when harpoon skills were highly valued? Or what about seamstresses, and rooms full of young women connecting calls. Hello, operator. Nope. Of course you don’t. Yesterday I wrote about perpetual culture change, today it’s the job market. I have no idea what people expect to do for a living these days. From my perspective, health care seems the best bet. It’s the industry with which I have the most contact, and it seems fairly vibrant.

Of course, I’ve always thought the best bet was to be flexible or hope you had a friend or a relative who could sidle up to you and whisper that plastics was the future, or something roughly akin to that. Flexibility means you seize opportunities when they come and try to make the most of them, regardless of what you planned. Which I guess goes along with the idea of having friends and family who can open doors. Because the secret to doors, the thing that makes them magical, is not that they open, but that you can go through them.
