Nurturing
My north fence garden is filling in nicely. I created it as suspport for a struggling chinquapin oak that was trying to survive in bare ground. The garden and the oak seem to be doing well. I’m particularly impressed with the upright rosemary, a plant that previously never graced my grounds. I have no idea why, but we always bought prostrate rosemary. Things change I guess.
A sage is also doing well, unfortunately I’m poorly versed as to the variety. At this writing, it’s nearly six feet tall with two Gregg’s Mist flowers at its feet. On either side of the oak is some mealy sage, lower growing plants, and they, too, are doing well with lots of flowers. Basically, I think I have a nice community of plants that are giving and taking from the soil in equal measure and providing good company to the roots of the oak.
And don’t we all need good company? I know I do. Although, I also have hermit tendencies. But overall, I need folks to talk to and visit with, especially as I age and get to the point where I might fall and have trouble getting up. Not that I plan on doing it or have done it. But I’m also prudent and know I could. My sore right arm is part of the pudding where that proof can be found. I suppose it could also be said that the same plants doing good work for the oak are also doing good work for me. I believe that means we’re a nurturing community.
