Something to See
It’s a cool summer morning in the hill country. The cats are fed, and I’m giving the trees a quick drink. We’re in a heat wave and the ground is fast losing water. Plants and grasses are drying up, almost everything is brown. I don’t know when we’re expected to turn the corner, but I hope it’s sooner rather than later. Although, two years of big spring rains have left the lakes full and the rivers running. So, all is not lost.
I’ve managed to mow almost all the dead grass on the back lots to cut down on fire risk and help mulch it back into the earth. I say almost because it’s hot, dusty business and I’m doing it piecemeal. It takes two passes because the wet spring led to unusually tall grass. The dust I blow up is a sight to see, and I’m caked when I finish. This is when I wish I had a grazing animal or two, but it’s mainly a wish because I have no real desire to get into animal husbandry.
Later this summer I’ll throw out a batch of wildflower seeds on the back lots to see what I can get this spring. If we get the promised wet winter, spring next year might be a real joy. I didn’t get much of a show this year, but if every year was big nothing would seem special. So, I try and hope for the occasional reward, because when it does come, it’s really something to see.
