The Visitor

Made a nice little discovery in the new garden along the north fence. Sunshine Mimosa (Mimosa strigillosa). How can you not like a plant with that name? It speaks of bright mornings, orange juice, and champagne. Plus, it’s got fern-like leaves and purple blooms. I’ll have to keep my eye on it and see what it does. It’s supposed to be a ground cover and it’s drought tolerant because it has deep roots, but so is khaki weed and I don’t want that in my garden.

In other garden news a friend sent me a note telling me he’d dug up and potted up some mealey blue sage for me, and I potted some Alamo Vine seeds and morning glory. Unfortunately, hot days might be upon us and that’s a less than ideal time to be planting and putting things to seed. But in the world of an older man like me, I’ve got time to water these days and the rain barrels are full. I guess you can say they’ll be watered with rain from days gone by.

Overall, the north garden is taking shape. The upright rosemary seems happy as do the two Gregg’s Mist flowers. Mostly, however, the north fence garden is a bare canvas of small plants and potential. But therein lies the pleasure, the imagining of how tomorrow might turn out, and the journey. The surprises and unexpected turns, both good and bad, the smile of a bloom, the flutter of wings, the satisfaction of green leaves and new growth. A small world of my own making, visible out my kitchen window, and only a few steps away.
