A Surprise

Schoolhouse Flowers

They say a watched pot never boils, and sometimes I think a watched plant never blooms. Several years back I moved the schoolhouse flowers to three different beds around the yard. There were lots of bulbs, way more than enough to go around. But none of them seemed to thrive. Until this year.

Then, in a walk around the yard, in the bed beneath the Mexican Plum beside a Turks Cap there came a surprise. Schoolhouse Flowers in full array, thick stalked, tall, growing without being watched, and flowering in great glory. The only trick I can think of that might have helped, was cutting back the Turks Cap and pulling up a Lantana to give the flowers a chance to find the sun. Find it they did. They now own this little piece of ground. It is theirs.

It gives me hope. After the next big rain, when the ground is soft and pliable, I may go around and relocate the other bulbs to homes within the yard where they too might find a place to flower, to become all that they should be. To replicate for them, whatever magic their kin found. And to replicate for me the sudden, pleasant, joyous surprise of finding plants in full bloom where none were expected.
