I always enjoy true love stories containing the phrase, he or she was married at the time. It’s mostly Hollywood star stories where I see this, but I suspect it’s more common than I think. And I’m not real sure I care. It just seems funny in an odd way and proves that love is a tricky devil. Because I’m fairly certain the relationship that proceeded the current true love story started out as a true love story as well. So, I’m not sure if the first relationship went wrong or the second one just felt like a better deal.
In either case, everyone seems happy now, although you never hear much about the previous spouse or spouses. We mostly focus on the new couple. In the case of celebrities that’s to be expected I suppose. The old spouse is old news. And the why of the leaving is only interesting if it was difficult, and the hero was escaping from something. Mostly, to me, the changes feel ordinary as if everyone was simply moving to a new house because the old house just felt wrong.
In the end, I suspect there’s no right or wrong answer. Some people stay for the long haul, some people trade up or down, and some people never get it right and just keep shopping. Luckily, I guess, society has backed down a bit from its previous insistence on one and done for marriage, which I think is especially beneficial if one finds oneself in an untenable situation. Although maybe every dissolved marriage is untenable for one reason or another. It’s certainly not for me to judge. All I can do is hope that everyone found happiness of some sort.
