Survivors

The recent rains and coolness have returned a little color to the land. Where once it was all about brown, the green is back. I had to mow for the first time in a month yesterday. Not an onerous chore because of my big riding mower, but dusty and noisy even though I wear ear protection. I even did a little weeding in the north garden, trying to free it of grass mostly so that the other little plants could grow next spring.

Last night I watched my college team beat another college team in the company of my friend whose wife passed away recently. His wife and my wife were best of friends. As families we spent a lot of time together, camping and traveling. He and I hunted together as well when I owned property up around Centerville. For a lot of years our families ate mostly venison when it came to meat.

Now, he and I are survivors along with two other spouses in our extended group. Death has come calling, which is pretty normal at our age. Luckily, we all have kids and extended families and friends. So, we have things to do and we do them. And our friends look out for us, and that’s nice. And next month some of us are going camping to spend time together on a river we love, and remember the women we loved as mothers and wives.
