Thanks for All the Fish

They peered inside my body to look at my prostate and found nothing of concern. Now we’re left to wonder what’s up with my slightly elevated PSA numbers, although it’s likely to be only my age, which is advanced. So, we’ll watch and test and I’ll get to know my urologist, just as I know my cardiologist, my ENT specialist, my vascular surgeon, my gastroenterologist, and my GP. A phalanx of well educated people doing their best to keep me alive.

It’s nice to know I can afford all this care. Big shout out to Medicare and supplemental insurance. I appreciate the country pitching in to help me out, although I paid into Medicare my entire working career. So, maybe I’m getting something back. Although, given the cost of things these days, I doubt it. I think I’m just a lucky beneficiary of those veterans of two wars and the great depression who thought perhaps the government could help out the little guy, like me.

Interesting side note, my grandmother’s sister graduated from high school with Lyndon Johnson and I have a picture of the two of them together. He went on to help craft Roosevelt’s New Deal, and then give us Medicare and Medicaid. Nice legacy. But now he’s just a picture in a book, and new forces are at play and empathy has gotten a bad name. I have no idea how we can rescue its reputation. All I can do is vote and hope it becomes cool again in what’s left of my lifetime. I think a caring world is a much nicer place to live.
